I've been in a in-service all day learning to do what I already should know how to. That being said, it was nice to review what I do well and really look at what I need to improve on. As for the what I do well, I found out was quite a bit and although this in-service had nothing to do with writing I learned something else. Promoting your own book is hard work.
A lot of writers have a 'day job'. What I mean by that is a job that pays the bills. We write because we love to do that and love to tell stories. For me it's not about whether or not I sell millions of books but about the ones I sell and if people really do enjoy them. I don't write to create great literature, but to create entertaining stories. If someone had told me before hand that I wouldn't make a fortune writing would I still do it? Of course I would.
Now back to the promoting of your own books. Some people really do this well. Please share your secrets. I seem to hit and miss on some of the better points (like social networking), but still miss big time on others. Maybe if we all share our best tricks it will be easier for each one of us to pick and chose the ones we are good at. I never plan on making it big (really hope to though), but what I really want is for those who read my work to enjoy it.
