Best Places to Get Information

I was hoping that there were people out there that had some great sites that they did research on.  I know of a few but it seems there are always others that have just that bit more.  I find that the CIA World Facts site has some of the best information on countries in the world.  I also love this site for name ideas of my characters, www.2000-names.com.  I'm almost afraid to go to some sites, since I like writing mysteries, because of who might be tracking it.  Sound paranoid? Probably.  So I hope we can all share some of our favorite sites.

For me, it's Wikipedia and Google all the way. Plus, I use a lot of stock photography websites to find references for my illustrations

I couldn't work without the Oxford English Dictionary; I love knowing the etymology of words, and what they suggest.

Here's a fun name site, particularly if you're writing in a (semi-recent) historical context:

http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager

You can find the most popular (or not) names for a given year, back to 1880. And you can type in a name to see its ranking graph. Fascinating! And helps pick names for particular eras.

I'm with Christina - Google and Wikipedia are the fastest most easy to use and direct sources of quick reliable information. Plus they are gateways to a vast selection of other sites.

Here's a unique site - I use Google Earth! If your setting is in the real world and involving real places, what better way to get a lay of the land?

Google Earth is a great way to see places that I might have no other way of seeing. My husband is also into Geography and loves using it as well.
