I was thinking about my travels today and I always take books with me until recently. For the last couple of years I have read books on my iPod. Now I know that many people say, "How can you read on something that small?" I find that although it may be small it can hold a very large number of books, music and videos (remember I started doing this before there was a Kindle). Now if that isn't enough it can also be easily packed and taken anywhere with the bonus of not having to be taken out for a check by the TSA. Don't get me wrong, I still love to have a book in my hands and have a huge number of books at home but I love having so many books, literally, at my fingertips. The main reason that this came up was that I can also go to the library on that same device.
Now back to what brought this whole topic up, my travels. When I was in Slovenia, and done with the day, I pulled out the iPod to read one of the many books that I had loaded on it. As I looked through my list I was unimpressed by any of the titles and I chose to go to my library and check out a book. Now for anyone who is 25 or younger this may sound normal, but to those of use over 25 it was a surreal experience. My hometown library was more than 5000 miles away and it was the middle of the night as well. With that said, I was still able to check out a book and start to read it within ten minutes.
This is the evolution of reading and books. I will still buy books but they will be the ones I want to display on my shelves or those that have touched me. The world has been forever changed by technology and I don't know what you think; is it for better or worse. Personally I happen to think it might be both ways.
